At WWDC 2025, Apple unveiled a groundbreaking feature: Live Translation, powered by Apple Intelligence, bringing real-time language translation to Messages, FaceTime, and Phone calls.
What Is Live Translation?
Live Translation is an AI-driven feature that enables real-time translation of text and speech during conversations. Whether you're texting, on a video call, or having a phone conversation, Apple’s latest innovation helps you break language barriers instantly — all while keeping your data private.
Where You Can Use Live Translation
1. Messages
- Translates as you type.
- Automatically delivers messages in your preferred language.
- Incoming messages are instantly translated into your language.
2. FaceTime
- Provides live captions during video calls.
- Ideal for multilingual family calls or international business meetings.
3. Phone Calls
- Supports live, spoken translations during voice calls.
- Works even when the person on the other end isn’t using an Apple device.
- Translates your speech out loud for the listener, and does the same in reverse for you.
Powered by On-Device Apple Intelligence
Apple emphasized that Live Translation is enabled by Apple-built models running entirely on your device. This ensures that your private conversations remain secure and are not processed in the cloud.
Live Translation API for Developers
Apple also introduced a new API that allows developers to enable live translation within their own communication apps, extending the feature’s reach beyond Apple’s default apps.
Supported Languages
Apple has not yet disclosed the number of languages supported at launch, but broader support is expected in future updates.
