Pinterest is advancing its advertising capabilities with the introduction of a new AI-powered feature called “auto-collages,” designed to help brands quickly and efficiently convert their product catalogs into visually engaging, shoppable content. This innovation aims to bridge the gap between e-commerce and user engagement, particularly among younger audiences like Gen Z.
What Are Auto-Collages?
Auto-collages use generative AI to automatically create themed, shoppable collages by clustering related product images from advertisers’ catalogs. The AI factors in multiple data points including:
- Outfit ideas
- User engagement trends
- Saved items
- Visually similar products
For example, the tool might compile a complete outfit using pieces from the same catalog or generate a new collage inspired by user-created visuals that have performed well on the platform. These AI-generated collages offer a fresh take on product discovery and personalization—driven by Pinterest's deep insights into user behavior and style preferences.
High Engagement with Gen Z
Pinterest reports that collages are among the most popular content formats, especially with Gen Z users. Tens of millions of collages have already been created on the platform, and Pinterest’s early tests show that users saved auto-collages at twice the rate of traditional product Pins.
This shift highlights a growing consumer appetite for immersive and visually dynamic shopping experiences. With users already inclined toward inspiration-based shopping, the auto-collage tool appears well-positioned to boost both engagement and conversion rates.
Born from Pinterest Ads Labs
The feature is a product of the Pinterest Ads Labs, an internal innovation initiative launched in 2024 focused on developing cutting-edge tools for advertisers using generative AI. According to Julie Towns, VP of Product Marketing and Operations at Pinterest, the auto-collage tool reflects Pinterest's broader mission to “redefine creative advertising through AI.”
“This tool transforms how brands can bring their product catalogs to life, offering instant, tailored, and engaging content that connects especially well with Gen Z and trend-driven audiences,” Towns said.
More Powerful Trends Tool for Advertisers
In addition to auto-collages, Pinterest has also unveiled enhancements to its “Trends” tool, a data-driven dashboard that allows advertisers to anticipate consumer behavior. The upgraded version will deliver real-time insights into what users are saving, curating, and actively shopping, offering brands more precise forecasting and campaign planning.
These tools come at a time when personalization and speed are increasingly crucial in digital advertising. By automating design elements and leveraging real-time behavioral data, Pinterest is helping brands not only keep up—but stay ahead—in the fast-moving world of social commerce.
Pinterest's new AI-driven features mark a pivotal step in evolving social shopping, blending creative automation with deep personalization. As the company continues to expand its tools for advertisers, brands that embrace these innovations may find new levels of engagement, particularly with visually driven, trend-conscious audiences.
